📗 Spanish Lesson 2: Estar, Ser, and Subject Pronouns
👤 Subject Pronouns
Spanish subject pronouns are often omitted because the verb ending shows who is doing the action.
| Singular | Meaning | Plural | Meaning |
| yo | I | nosotros/nosotras | we (masc./fem.) |
| tú | you (fam. sg.) | vosotros/vosotras | you (fam. pl., Spain only) |
| él / ella | he / she | ellos / ellas | they (masc./fem.) |
| usted (Ud.) | you (formal sg.) | ustedes (Uds.) | you (formal/plural, all Latin America) |
⚠️ No “it” – Spanish has no subject pronoun for “it”. Use él or ella only for people or sometimes animals, never for objects.
📍 Estar – “to be” for temporary states
Estar is irregular. Conjugation:
| yo estoy | nosotros estamos |
| tú estás | vosotros estáis |
| él/ella/Ud. está | ellos/ellas/Uds. están |
📌 Four main uses of ESTAR
- 📍 Location: El banco está en la calle. (The bank is on the street.)
- 🩺 Health: Estoy enfermo. (I am sick.)
- 😊 Changing mood/condition: Ella está feliz. (She is happy – now.)
- 👗 Taste / appearance: La sopa está deliciosa. (The soup tastes delicious.)
🏷️ Ser – “to be” for essential qualities
Ser is also irregular. Conjugation:
| yo soy | nosotros somos |
| tú eres | vosotros sois |
| él/ella/Ud. es | ellos/ellas/Uds. son |
📌 Seven uses of SER
- Description (permanent): La casa es roja. (The house is red.)
- Profession (no article unless modified): Ella es doctora. / Es un doctor excelente.
- Point of origin (ser + de): Somos de México.
- Identification (nationality, relation): Ellos son mis primos.
- Material (ser + de): La mesa es de madera.
- Possession (ser + de): El libro es de Juan. → Juan’s book.
📌 Contraction: de + el = del (e.g., el perro del niño – the boy’s dog).
- Where an event takes place (ser + en): La fiesta es en mi casa. (The party takes place at my house.)
⚖️ Ser vs. Estar – Quick Comparison
| Use SER for... | Use ESTAR for... |
| Identity & origin | Location |
| Permanent traits (color, size, personality) | Temporary conditions (mood, health) |
| Profession (without article) | Ongoing actions (progressive – not covered here) |
| Material, possession, event location | Taste / appearance (opinion) |
🎯 Mnemonic: “How you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar.” Everything else? Think ser.

- No apostrophe for possession – use de + noun.
- Learn both verbs together – they are not interchangeable.
